Preserve your pear butter with this perfect pear butter canning recipe. Canned pear butter can be used throughout the year as a low-fat substitute for butter.
A great pear butter canning recipe starts with a large batch of homemade pear butter. Pear butter can be used as a less fat alternative in place of regular butter. In addition, it also tastes great in baked goods. Just substitute half the regular butter with the pear butter. Finally, use pear butter as a sauce when cooking meat.
However, since it isn’t used in large quantities, it is best to store it in smaller quantities to preserve the freshness. This is where canning comes in. Fortunately, prepared pear butter is easy to can.
Pear Butter Canning Recipe
First, sterilize canning jars and rings and clean the new lids. I recommend pint jars since it is a smaller amount, which will more likely be used up within two weeks than a quart jar of pear butter might.
Next, place the funnel into the jar and pour the hot pear butter into the jar. (Applesauce will work here as well). Be sure to leave ½ inch of head space at the top of the jar. Use a spatula or head space tool to remove any air bubbles.
Wipe the jar rim with a clean wet dish rag to remove any residue. Then dry the rim with a clean towel. Finally, place the lid on top of the jar and secure the ring firmly.
The next step is to add water to your water bath canner. But be sure the rivet is on the bottom. Never place jars in the canner without the rivet in place. Jar bottoms should never touch the bottom of the pan.
Add the jars of Pear Butter the steam canner. My canner holds 8 pint jars and 7 quart jars. Add enough water to cover up an inch of the jar. Follow the instructions for your canner. The canner instructions for my pear butter canning recipe is simple. Bring water in steam canner to a boil and process for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes remove jars and set on towel on the counter to cool. The jars should not be touching. You will hear a distinct popping sound when the jars seal. I love that POP! Leave jars to cool at least 24 hours.
Test the jars to make sure they are sealed. Press the top of the jar in the center of the lid. The middle of the lid should not pop up.
Remove the ring and wash the jars and rings. This is another instance when I test the top of the jar. Dry the jar and ring. Screw the ring on and label the jar. Store in a cool dry place, such as your cupboard.
